Strange Fruits to Add to Your Dinner Table

There are a number fruit and vegetables that you may not have considered trying before. The shape, color, and texture of these fruits and veggies can be much different then we are used to. All fruits and veggies are packed with important vitamins and minerals that make them worth eating.
Star fruit is an interesting shaped fruit that when cut the slices are the shape of a star. These are also known as a Carrabolla fruit. When you look at the flavor and texture of a star fruit it is very similar to a green grape. The entire star fruit can be eaten.  It has a great tart flavor and a crunch which makes it great for fruit salad. This great fruit is high in vitamin C while being low in sugar. When you purchase fresh star fruit from the store look for a yellow fruit with just a slight amount of brown on the tips of the star.
You may be also beginning to see prickly pear in your local markets. This is a cactus and therefore has spines. The prickly pear is found primarily in the United States. Prickly pear is high in Vitamin C and other antioxidants called flavonoids and is also high in dietary fiber. Clearly you need to remove the needles and spines before you can eat the prickly pear. You can choose to scrape of the needles or just skin the fruit. Once the skins are off you can cut them as desired. The cactus has two parts you can eat.  The green pads taste similarly to green beans. The fruit of the prickly pear is also good to eat.  Depending on the type of prickly pear they can taste like watermelon or strawberries. There are literally more then a hundred different prickly pear varieties.
Although these new foods may seem odd, they are great additions to our kitchens. Stay healthy by adding these fruits to your diet.  The high vitamin C can assist you this winter by keeping you healthy.
